Raw Milk: Good For You?
73
Milk consumption dates back over 10,000 years and was renowned for its healing powers. In a glass of real milk or "raw" milk (straight from the udders of a grass fed cow that has not been genetically engineered or cloned) is a complete balanced meal. If one had to live on it alone they could.
In one glass of raw milk contains:
- Proteins
- Carbohydrates
- Vitamins
- Minerals
- Enzymes
- Cholesterol
- Beneficial Bacteria
Raw milk has been proven to reverse disease and improve health. Processing, according to those who are in favor of raw milk distribution causes such diseases as osteoporosis, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. Milk in its natural form has always been a healthy food. After pasteurization, milk became a commodity.
Louis Pasteur
Pasteur gained notoriety in the 1800s when mold was affecting wine crops at a rapid rate. In stepped Pasteur, a French chemist who developed the concept which saved wine growers from financial ruin. His findings asserted uncleanliness causes disease. He developed a process which harmful microbes in perishable food products were destroyed using heat, without destroying the food. There is one major flaw in the research critics say. Pasteurization does not kill ALL harmful microbes in milk and it DOES harm the milk.
What is pasteurization?
Pasteurization refers to the process of heating milk to at least 130 degrees F. for at least 45 seconds or heating milk to 160 degrees F for at least 15 seconds. Bottom line, pasteurization lengthens the shelf life of milk. Critics of the pasteurization process believe it destroys the beneficial components naturally present in raw milk. Instead of wasting rancid milk or feeding it to their hogs, farmers could now pass this altered milk-form on to consumer by taking sour milk and making it more desirable, thus increasing their profits. Making milk money became big business. Pasteurized milk is just another processed food with side effects worth mentioning.
Damage through pasteurization?
- Pasteurization destroys nutritional properties, vitamins, enzymes, and minerals present in "raw" milk.
- Heating milk creates contaminants such as lipid oxidants and protein toxins.
- Heat treating milk interferes with calcium metabolism. 50% of milk's calcium is unusable and cannot be assimilated in the body after pasteurization.
- Causes diabetes, osteoporosis, cancers, allergies, ear infections, eczema, lactose intolerance, asthma, constipation, etc.
- Before pasteurization became the standard, doctors would go their entire careers without seeing cases of diseases (prostate, breast cancer) which are common in today's society.
Raw milk good for you...
- Helps clear up allergies, particularly in children.
- Raw milk reduces the recurrence of middle-ear infections.
- Raw milk helps build and strengthen the immunity we need to resist pathogens.
- Drinking raw milk reduces risks for cancers (colon, prostate, breast)
- Lowers risk of osteoporosis
- Lowers risk of kidney stones
- Enhances fertility and reproduction
The Whole Truth About Milk
Interesting research
Pottenger Cat Study (1940s)
One group of cats on raw milk...
Another on heated or pasteurized milk...
Those that drank the heated milk experienced...
- Skeletal changes
- Decreased reproductive capacity
- Suffered from infectious and degenerative diseases common today
- Experienced acute illnesses (diarrhea, vomiting)
Those that drank raw milk were active and experienced good health and reproduced for generations.

There has been alot of flack about unpasturized milk...a man recenly was charged for selling it, how rediculous is that, milk is milk and as you said we've been driking it for thousandsof years, how can it be illegal just becuase it wasn't psturized..the world sometimesis crazy..lol...anyway great hub, great info...thanks
Very true! and ultra pasteurization is worse by far.
Interesting. Now where can I get a cow?
Great hub! You can go the Real Milk website to find out where to get in your area. It's a great resource. I've heard of people who get around selling it by putting a tag on it thta says "not for human consumption" which is nuts, but it works.
The reason you can't sell raw milk is!Too many people who sell it do not have clean habits, like manure falling in the milk, because they did not clean the udder and tie the tail back.I know this because I used to milk cows by hand, and you have to be very clean. You also have to strip the cows teats or they will get mastitus and you will be drinking cottage milk. The cows have to be vaccinated for Brucelosis also.I can go on and on.so that is why we have pasturization.
C.J,
My family has been drinking raw milk for the past two years. To those interested in the idea of drinking raw milk, I suggest looking up the research done by Dr. Weston Price. I liked the article and thought it was a good introduction to the topic. I do however have a few notes of caution for those wanting to take the plunge into the raw milk arena.
1) Be careful with who your supplier is. We get our raw milk from a Amish farmer who sells his milk to the organic market. His farm and cows are meticulously cared for. His milk is tested every day before it goes to market. Because of this, I am confident that the milk is good. I would never by raw milk from an unknown source.
2) Be prepared to pay more...it's expensive.
3) Check out your state laws before taking the plunge. You want to know what you're getting into.
Other than that, great article. Thanks for your contribution to Hub pages.

Just wanted to let you know that I provided a link to this hub on my new one about milk.
I recently purchased 3 Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats. I have stopped drinking store bought milk completely and when my goats can be breed I will only drink the raw milk I get from them. I'll also make my own cheese and butter. I raise chickens for eggs too. Factory farm chickens are treated terribly and you can taste that in their eggs. Not to mention all the antibiotics they were given, those are in their eggs too.
I think it's rediculous how much the government rules our lives. If I want to drink raw milk that's my choice!

Excellent info. I have been doing some studying and research on this myself lately. I'm discovering more and more that as consumers, if we simply buy in to what we are told by the big companies, that we are taking very big risks with our health. We all need to do some research and take some responsibility for our own health/wellness. Hubs like this make it easier by offering up the information for us. Thank you..
